About us.The South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Operational Delivery Network provides a source of expert clinical advice and care for adult critical care patients in Barnsley, Bassetlaw , Doncaster , Rotherham and Sheffield Hospitals.
The Network’s Multi-disciplinary Team work collaboratively to support the wider Network in providing equitable, high quality patient care that is consistent across the Network. A Governance Structure ensures that guidelines, protocols, clinical pathways and models of care and reviewed regularly and recommendations to improve services provided are identified and shared regarding good practice. |

Yorkshire & Humber Adult Critical Care Transfer Guidelines - September 2026
The guideline establishes a standardised approach to the safe transfer of critically ill adults across Yorkshire and the Humber. It covers Level 2 and Level 3 patients and emphasises that transfer should be considered a continuation of critical care, with appropriate monitoring, treatment and patient safety maintained throughout. Key requirements include clinical risk assessment, patient stabilisation, appropriately trained staff, suitable equipment and medicines, safe transport arrangements, clear communication and structured handover.
The guideline also sets out governance responsibilities for Critical Care Networks, Acute Trusts and ambulance services, including education, competency assessment, incident reporting, audit and quality improvement. Standardised documentation and checklists are required, with formal multidisciplinary handover on arrival. Additional guidance is provided for specialist transfers such as trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac, obstetric, burns, ECMO and infectious disease patients, with the overall aim of reducing avoidable harm and ensuring consistent standards of care across the region.
