Benchmarking has been described as.....
“The practice of being humble enough to admit that someone else is better at something and being wise enough to try to learn how to match and even surpass them at it.” (International Benchmarking Clearinghouse, 1992) Clinical benchmarking is a “systematic process in which current practice and care are compared to, and amended to attain, best practice and care” (DH, 2010b). There is a long history of benchmarking critical care nursing practice across the North East and Yorkshire and this is something the units across South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw are now able to participate in. Like any good quality improvement initiative the benchmarking process is under review. The aim of the review being to improve the process, resulting in better audit data, which will drive improved patient care. Once agreement has been achieved the audit calendar and tools will be uploaded to this site. Clinical benchmarking compares clinical outcomes and processes. It helps identify areas for improvement in patient care. It reduces variations in practice and enhances clinical effectiveness. |
